Setting Up Meta Business Portfolio Access for Safe Connect

A practical, step-by-step guide to help you get your Facebook Pages and Instagram accounts ready on the Meta side, so they can be connected in Kontentino via Safe Connect.

New here? For what Safe Connect is and how to connect inside Kontentino, start with our guide on How to Connect Your Meta Profiles Using Safe Connect. The following guide will cover only the Meta-side setup. πŸ’ͺ

The one rule that governs everything

Safe Connect can only connect a page that is an owned or assigned asset of a Business Portfolio you are inside. Simply having access to a page that lives in someone else's portfolio is not enough β€” it won't appear when you try to connect. Every step below exists to get your page into that state.

πŸ’Ό Step 1: Check your access to the Business Portfolio the page lives in

The managed Facebook Page can already sit inside a Meta Business Portfolio. So the goal here is to confirm you have access to the portfolio the page lives under, with the page among your assigned business assets.

How to check:

  • Open the account switcher (top-left corner) β†’ select a business portfolio β†’ check under business assets if the assets (Facebook page, Instagram account) you want to connect are listed in the portfolio,

  • If it's not there β†’ you don't have access to that portfolio yet, and the page owner needs to grant it (see Step 2).

🀹 Step 2: Get access to the Business Portfolio

If Step 1 showed you don't yet have access, this is where you fix that. Usually the page sits in the client's or owner's portfolio, so you need access to that portfolio β€” with the page assigned to you as a business asset.

What steps need to be taken by the client/portfolio owner:

  • In the portfolio's left panel menu, click on the portfolio's Settings β†’ People β†’ Invite people,

  • Enter the person's email (it must be tied to a Facebook account) and choose Full access,

  • Assign the specific Facebook Pages and Instagram accounts,

  • Send the invite; the person accepts by email (invitation expires in 30 days).

Note: It is sufficient to grant Basic/Partial access to the portfolio itself, but make sure you grant Full access to the pages/assets in the next step.

ℹ️ If the "I have access, but the page won't show" error shows up β€” use Business assets β†’ search the Page β†’ Assign people:

πŸ’‘ Tip β€” for agencies/teams managing clients at scale

You're already connected, so this is just an optional next step β€” and it's simply about moving the page into your own portfolio, and you can move it back to the client's portfolio at any time. If you're managing a lot of clients long-term, holding the pages in your own portfolio is worth considering, because:

  • You're not dependent on the client's setup. If their portfolio gets restricted or someone removes your access, an access-only arrangement falls apart. Your own portfolio is yours to control.

  • Everything lives in one place. One portfolio, consistent roles across clients, and a single spot to manage it all instead of hopping between dozens of client portfolios.

Note: Only adding a page (business asset) that is owned by your client's portfolio into your own portfolio will not be sufficient for the safe connection. Make sure to complete the step of giving you access to the client's portfolio.

What if a Facebook Page isn't in any portfolio yet?

Some owners aren't especially tech-savvy, or simply don't want to deal with Business Suite setup themselves β€” and that's fine. Rather than sending them off to create a portfolio, the simpler route is to have them make you an Admin on the Page directly in Facebook. From there, you can take care of everything else. β†’ see our guide on how to be added as an Admin on the Page.

This is how a page/asset that isn't in any portfolio would appear in Business Suite β†’ under Other assets:

How to add an existing page into your Business Portfolio

  1. In your Business Portfolio settings, go to Pages β†’ Add β†’ Add an existing Facebook page (it's best to paste the URL of the specific page to find it) and select the page:

  2. To assign access to your team, go to Business assets β†’ Assign people.

❗️Important note: During this process, you'll be asked to assign permissions to the current page owner –– make sure you grant it. Not checking this option will remove ownership of the page for your client.

Once added, the page is an owned asset of your portfolio, and it will appear in Safe Connect.

If you don't have a business portfolio yet, here's how you can create one

  • In Meta Business Suite, go to the Business Portfolios section,

  • Click Create a new Business Portfolio (portfolio name, your first and last name, business email).

❌ What does not work

Two routes which might feel like the natural move but do not work for Safe Connect, because they only grant access to a page that stays in someone else's portfolio:

  • Add a Partner (linking portfolios) β€” Users β†’ Partners β†’ Add partner.

  • Request access to a page in another portfolio β€” Pages β†’ Request access.

In both cases, the page never becomes an asset of a portfolio you're in, so it won't surface in Safe Connect. Always get access to the existing portfolio (basic or full) and have admin rights/full access to all managed pages.

🧐 A few rules to remember

  • Instagram must be linked to a Facebook Page for it to be assignable in Business Suite and to appear in Kontentino for Safe Connect. A standalone Instagram account won't show.

  • Both assets must be assigned to you β€” both Facebook and Instagram must be an assigned business asset to your Facebook user account in the parent portfolio.

  • A page in more than one portfolio still connects once it's properly assigned to you; multi-portfolio placement on its own is not the blocker.

βœ… Once you're set up

When the page (and its Instagram) is an assigned asset of a portfolio you're in, head to Kontentino to finish connecting β€” see How to Connect Your Meta Profiles Using Safe Connect for the in-app steps.
